Why
Childproofing? ________________________________________________________________________________
The Facts: Among
children ages 14 and under, it is estimated that 40
percent of deaths and 50 percent of nonfatal unintentional
injuries occur in and around the home.
In 2002, approximately
2100 children ages 14 and under died in the home from
unintentional injuries. More than 70% of these deaths
occurred among children
ages 4 and under.
More than 4.5 million
children ages 14 and under are treated in the emergency
room each year for injuries that occurred in the home.
More children die from
accidents in the home each year than from all other
childhood illnesses combined!
The Solution:
We are happy to report
that most of these injuries are preventable! Proactive
parents
can play a crucial role in the prevention of these accidents
by examining their home
for potential dangers and by scheduling an In-Home safety
evaluation with us.
Child-proofing your
home allows your new explorer to move through his environment
with fewer restrictions. The proper placement of quality
safety products allows you
peace of mind and your child freedom to try out his
new legs, not to mention his new independence. The reality
is that parents can't be by their child's side every
minute of
the day, child-proofing your home, while not a substitute
for adult supervision, adds an extra layer of protection.
Please remember that
as your child grows, your child-proofing needs may change.
With a newborn, you may not need outlet covers. When
that same infant begins to crawl, that same electrical
outlet can be a serious hazard. When your crawler
becomes a walker and climber, safety gates and door
locks will be pertinent to your home safety. For these
reasons, the National Safe Kids Campaign recommends
having a child-proofing evaluation performed each year
in your home.
