Child Safety a Must at Family Events

Toddlers from Peoria, Goodyear pulled from pools

Two toddlers were transported to local hospitals Sunday after being pulled from pools.

The 2-year-old from Peoria was swimming with her family at a friend’s house in the 9300 block of West Pontiac Drive when someone noticed she was under water, said Mike Tellef, a Peoria police and fire spokesman.

The toddler was not breathing when a family member started CPR just before 3:15 p.m. Peoria firefighters treated the girl at the home and she was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

About two hours later, partygoers in Goodyear pulled a 2-year-old from a pool in the 14400 block of West Indianola Avenue.

Bystanders performed CPR on the boy and he was conscious and crying when firefighters arrived, said Goodyear Fire Battalion Chief Russ Braden.

The boy was taken to West Valley Hospital for treatment.

At the time of both incidents, friends and family members were believed to have been in the area.

It’s easy for friends and family members to be distracted at family gatherings but the results can be devastating, Braden said.

“The next thing you know your attention is drawn away from the most dangerous thing in your backyard – your pool,” he said.

Tellef of Peoria offered these tips:

“This incident is a tragic reminder that when you are gathering around a pool, one person has to be the ‘designated water watcher’ and do nothing but watch the water,” he said. “The person cannot be involved in conversations or doing anything else but watch the people in the water.”

Use barriers such as fences, self-closing or latching gates and doors; constantly supervise swimmers; and learn CPR and encourage swimming lessons, no matter one’s age.

It is so important to have pool fences up in your backyard to prevent these accidental deaths of young children. Arizona has so many pools, and there are going to be many homes without pool fences, but this should not be the case. Arizona Childproofers sells very affordable pool fences and there is no reason whatsoever for a pool to be ungated. Follow the ABC’s of water safety. Adult Supervision, Barriers, and Childrens Swim Classes.
