Toddler nearly drowns in Surprise pool

A Surprise child is in stable condition after a near-drowning Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the 18-month-old’s home in the 15500 block of West Ventura Street at about 6 p.m. after the girl’s mother noticed her daughter floating facedown in the family’s pool, said Kevin Pool, assistant fire chief in Surprise.

The mother was able to pull the girl from the pool and perform rescue procedures before emergency personnel arrived.

By the time firefighters arrived, the child had started breathing again but was flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Pool said.

This incident marks the fourth drowning or near-drowning in Surprise in 2009. Last year, city firefighters responded to five such calls.
