This Time of Year Beautiful Weather and Drownings

It is that time of year when we
get outside more often and we start hearing of drowning’s….babies, children AND
adults.  Below are a few things to be
aware of….watch for more information on Water Safety during this next week.


What are the major risk

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), identifies some
significant factors related to unintentional drowning risks, including:


Lack of barriers
and supervision.

under one year most often drown in bathtubs, buckets, or toilets.

ages one to 4 years, most drownings occur in residential swimming pools.

Most young children who drowned in
pools were last seen in the home, had been out of sight less than five minutes,
and were in the care of one or both parents at the time.

such as pool fencing, can help prevent children from gaining access to the pool
area without caregivers’ awareness.


Age and recreation in natural water settings (such as lakes, rivers, or
the ocean

percent of drownings in natural water settings increases with age. Most
drownings in those over 15 years of age occur in natural water settings.


Seizure disorders.

persons with seizure disorders, drowning is the most common cause of
unintentional injury death, with the bathtub as the site of highest drowning


Alcohol use.

Alcohol use is involved in up to half of adolescent
and adult deaths associated with water recreation and about one in five reported
boating fatalities. Alcohol influences balance, coordination, and judgment, and
its effects are heightened by sun exposure and heat.

Toddler nearly drowns in Surprise pool

A Surprise child is in stable condition after a near-drowning Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the 18-month-old’s home in the 15500 block of West Ventura Street at about 6 p.m. after the girl’s mother noticed her daughter floating facedown in the family’s pool, said Kevin Pool, assistant fire chief in Surprise. Read the rest of this entry »

2-year-old unresponsive after found in pool; flown to St. Joe’s

SURPRISE – Surprise Fire Officials say that a 2-year-old boy was found in a pool and was unresponsive at the scene.
